Family Day Trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Public Museum Addition)

Milwaukee is my families favorite city to visit. It has so much to offer and endless things to do for families. This past weekend we set off on an adventure to The Milwaukee Public Museum during Milwaukee Museum week (discount museum tickets for a win!). From there we headed to the Milwaukee Public Market for lunch and dessert.


First Stop > Milwaukee Public Museum


  • Location: 800 W Wells St, Milwaukee, WI 53233

  • Hours: Typically open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but check the website for current hours.

  • Parking: onsite parking ramp for a fee or on weekends there is free street parking

  • Time budget: 2-4 hours

  • Tips for Your Trip

    • Arrive early to avoid crowds and have ample time to explore.

    • Check for any special exhibits or events happening during your visit.

    • No snacks allowed on the exhibit floors

  • Must-See Exhibits:

    • IMAX Theater: Immerse yourself in the Milky Way and learn more about our constellations on the giant screen.

    • Butterfly Garden: Walk among live fluttering butterflies. If you stand still, you may get a butterfly to land on you.


    • Dinosaurs: Explore the prehistoric era with life-sized dinosaur exhibits.

    • Rainforest: Explore the ecosystem and wildlife of the rainforest with this realistic exhibit.

    • Streets of Old Milwaukee: Jump back in time and walk through a turn of the 20th century immigrant town. Fun fact: the exhibits artifacts and town's decorations change throughout the year


Second Stop > Milwaukee Public Market

The Milwaukee Public Market is a vibrant and bustling marketplace located in the Historic Third Ward of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This is a great stop for families as there are a lot of different cuisine and vendors to meet all preferences.


  • Location: 400 N. Water St., Milwaukee, WI 53202

  • Hours: Vary so check the website for current hours.

  • Parking: onsite parking lot for a fee, local parking lots for a fee or on weekends there is free street parking

  • Time budget: 1-3 hours

  • Must-See Vendors:

    • The Spice House: sells fresh high-quality spices.

    • St. Paul Fish Company: they sources fresh fish and seafood for locals. (Tip: make sure to get on the wait list right away if you want to eat here)

    • On The Bus: All-Vegan restaurant. *this is my kids all time favorite stop. They love the smoothies and vegan ice cream sandwiches

    • West Allis Cheese & Sausage Shoppe: BEST Bloody Marys in the Market!

    • THAI-NAMITE: Fresh sushi bar. *My daughter's favorite stop for a veggie roll

  • Pro tip: collect your families orders and take them up to the loft to eat overlooking the market. Then you can sit down and enjoy all the delicious food without the crowd. Also best location for people watching!
